02 The mark
The sun at noon, all year.
Photograph the sun from the same spot at the same time every day for a year and it traces a lopsided figure eight: an analemma. The loop comes from the tilt of the Earth’s axis, and the lopsidedness from its elliptical orbit.
Our mark is that figure for noon at Violet Town, drawn from NOAA’s solar tables. Its 24 dots are about 15 days apart, with the December solstice at the top. The warm half runs from the September equinox to the March equinox; the cool half is the rest of the year.
